April 6, 2021 By Steve Adams

With just 4 days to go to the big race, Ben Linfoot of the Sporting Life provides an in-depth look at the horses running in the 2021 Randox Grand National at Aintree.

He provides a horse-by-horse analysis including a star rating for each of the runners as follows:

1 Star = I Just Can’t See It
2 Stars = Hard To Make A Case
3 Stars = Wouldn’t Put You Off
4 Stars = On The Shortlist
5 Stars = Looks A Bet

He’ll be updating his guide, once the final declarations have been made on Thursday 8th April, but you can see what his thoughts are and see which 2 horses get his 5 star rating at: https://www.sportinglife.com/racing/news/grand-national-pinstickers-guide/190681

What We Learned from Narrowing The Field

December 23, 2020 By Steve Adams

Ben Aitken at Narrow The Field provides a weekly free blog post where he highlights things he learned from the weekend’s racing.

In what is probably his last free blog post of 2020, he comments that horse racing is about the only thing that has kept him sane, in what has been a crap year away from racing.

He analyses Itchy Feet’s performance in the 3 runner Graduation Chase at Ascot and dissects, the type of race track he feels suits him best.

He then takes a look at Allart’s impressive victory in his first race over the bigger obstacles in the Noel Novices’ Chase and looks at Nicky Henderson’s record in Ascot Novice Chases.

And finally he analyses why the conditions were wrong for Hill Sixteen in the Tommy Whittle Chase and why his effort can be excused.

Ben’s articles make for an enjoyable and informative read. You can read the full article: https://www.narrowingthefield.co.uk/what-we-learned-from-the-weekend-18th-19th-20th-december/

Introduction to Staking Plans

December 16, 2020 By Steve Adams

UK Horse Racing looked at staking plans and whether you need one for your betting. They looked at 4 simple staking plans, one of which scared them ridgid.

Key Takeaways:

  • A staking plan is a method of controlling how much each bet should bet.
  • Staking plans vary in their complexity; from the exceedingly simple to the fantastically exotic and sophisticated.
  • Use a good staking plan to ensure the possibility of your betting bank going bust is kept to a minimum.

There are two aspects to successful betting; the first is to have the right selections. Without a decent set of selections one is never going to make a profit no matter what one does. The other aspect is the money side of things; how much does one put onto the next bet? This is the function of the staking plan; without this one could be placing the wrong stake onto the wrong horse. Ultimately betting without a staking plan will negate good horse selection.

Building Your Own 24/7 Betting Bot Using A Raspberry Pi

December 16, 2020 By Steve Adams

Running a betting bot can be a nightmare. Most software only runs on Windows, so if you’re a Mac user it’s game over, and even if you use Windows, the second your computer goes to sleep it stops working. Michael Wilding from Race Advisor is going to attempt to use a Raspberry Pi to run a betting bot, 24/7, from a home internet connection.

Key Takeaways:

  • Using a remote desktop or VPS is expensive, and they’re sluggish and slow.
  • Michael’s investigating whether you can build our own betting bot computer, for less than £100, using a Raspberry Pi.
  • You can connect it to your internet connection, and let it run without the risk of it every stopping.

Check out the first video in the series, where he covers what he’s purchased for the job:

In episode 2 Michael installs Windows 10 and finishes setting up the Raspberry Pi and asks viewers to vote on which betting bot they want to see installed:

Return of spectators a vital step to secure racing’s future

December 2, 2020 By Steve Adams

Crowds return to racing today at Haydock, Lingfield, Ludlow and Kempton, with a maximum of 2,000 spectators permitted at each of the courses. However all 4 courses expect to number their actual attendance in three figures rather than four.

Key Takeaways:

  • No alcohol will be served, but in other respects the raceday experience will be as close to normal as social distancing protocols permit.
  • Spectators will obviously have a fantastic view of the racing itself, and there will be good access to the parade ring and winner’s enclosure.
  • A sell-out crowd of 2,000 fans will watch horses race over the Grand National fences on Saturday.

Cheltenham will need to find a new sponsor for its most prestigious race after the cider-maker Magners said that it will not take up an option to back the Gold Cup in 2022 after its initial three-year contract ends next March.

Where You Can Go Racing This December

December 1, 2020 By Steve Adams

From Wednesday, 2nd December, spectators will be allowed into certain racecourses in England following a relaxation of government coronavirus restrictions.

Courses in Tier 2 areas can host up to 2,000 spectators (there are no racecourses in Tier 1).

The Racing Post have reviewed the December fixture list and identified which race meetings spectators maybe able to attend, although they state each course will have their own restrictions and are likely to give precedence to annual members.

In their recent article they provided details of which courses fall into Tier 2, which are Tier 3 and therefore can not allow spectators and which are in Wales or Scotland, yet to be determined.

With tiers due to be reviewed on the 16th December, things may change for race meetings later in the month.

Alarming statistics highlight major issues in National Hunt racing

November 26, 2020 By Steve Adams

Kevin Blake has studied the numbers and discovered what he feels are alarming issues regarding the quality of National Hunt racing, including the effects of an inflated Graded race programme.

Key Takeaways:

  • The increase in the number of Graded races at the same time that runner numbers have reduced, has created an unhealthy situation in National Hunt racing.
  • Even the Cheltenham Festival has become a victim of the inflation of its programme.
  • With so many of the best horses now being in a much smaller number of hands, it has allowed the biggest trainers to exploit the bloated programme book.

National Hunt racing still has all the assets to consistently deliver great sporting spectacles, but right now the bloated programme of Graded races is failing the sport, the vast majority of its participants and all of its followers.
